How CBT Beats Depression
In this first podcast from How I Beat Depression we will look at three simple CBT techniques to help assist with lowering depression. First the problem of tiredness causing inactivity will be explored. Then the tendency to downplay success and praise will be examined. Finally overgeneralisations will be challenged.

When is the next podcast due?

I have suffered with depression for most of my adult life, and although much much better now (in my 40′s) I am prone to ‘episodes’ which are usually triggered off by an event. This podcast on CBT was great to listen to and I will certainly be using the techniques! Look forward to the next podcast – thank you

Next podcast is due in about a weeks time, looking at exercise and depression. Then a second CBT program is on the cards. Thanks for listening – Justin

I came across this during a real crisis point, I listened to it at night and found myself trying to put into action the techniques in the days that followed and found that it certainly helped me start to question the way I was thinking about myself. I am improving but I still have a long way to go. I am on the waiting list for some CBT which could take some time so it is good to feel like I am taking some steps forward. There is so much advice about depression out there that can confuse and swap a depressed mind and also a lot of people ready to cash in on a desperate person trying to find answers. I like that this website makes no bold claims and it is what it is. I hope that made sense. Thanks

This was a wonderful listen. I think we should all “say thank you and shut up” when we’re told compliments. But it is so hard, for sure!

Thank you would like to hear more about alternative methods such as TMS. I am on so many drugs I don’t know what is a side effect and what is the mood disorder.

Thanks for the podcast!

I was sure I had BEATEN depression 23 years ago but it comes back at you in different guises. I feel this website’s name is misleading to people who aren’t well. You can OVERCOME a bout of depression but you don’t BEAT it. Also, a lot of people talk about CBT like it’s the be-all & end-all. Short answer: it doesn’t help many, many people, yet most insurance companies will only cover that therapy.
There is a lot of great stuff on this website though, for helping to maybe OVERCOME depression

Thanks for your comment Matt. We made a page called what beat means at: http://www.howibeatdepression.com/what-beat-means.
We agree with you beating is an part of an ongoing, active recovery and not, in many cases, simply past tense.
CBT like anything is not the be all and end all but can be a very useful tool to have in a toolkit.
Cheers,
Justin
