Growing up as the youngest of five girls you could say that I always felt left out. My father left when I was 9 leaving my mother to bring us up alone. She had to hold down three jobs and leave most of the mothering up to my older sisters; they resented me for this and found many ways to show me. They ganged up on me, bullied me and picked on me constantly. I started feeling lonely, abandoned, insecure and very confused. Why did dad leave, did I do something wrong? My mother started drinking most nights and every weekend and we had wild parties at our house all the time. Mutual Support Groups | A Vital Link in the recovery from depression
One thing I totally vouch for is the positive effect and value from support groups. Not necessarily therapeutic groups, I’m more referring to organic mutual support groups run by and for their members. I believe that when done properly (and many statistics back this up) group therapy is a lot more effective than one on one psychotherapy or counselling – when it’s done properly. If you think about it logically for a few moments, it totally makes sense. Just always keep in mind I am not rubbishing one on one therapy at all, sometimes it’s more appropriate than group therapy.
